DIS-EASE

Naseem Darbey’s Arts Council England award supports the R&D (2014-2015) phase of her project Dis-ease. The project has evolved from an investigation of “dis-ease” (dis ‘away from’ in Latin; ease refers to ease and unease) and contemporary experiences of breast cancer, to a storytelling-based exploration of two women from different centuries who meet under the surgeon’s knife. Each woman represents a triumphant story where historical and contemporary experiences of mastectomy provide meaning, insight and inspiration for new audiences.

Darbey advanced her unique sculptural “hollow-drawing” technique as part of her R&D residency at The Gordon Museum of Pathology, King’s College London in 2014. Continued investigations at the Gordon collections, combined with new materials, real and virtual animation, light and chromatic shifts, enable Darbey to develop her collection of enhanced textile-based hollow drawing sculptures that explore
Dis-ease as experienced though breast cancer.
