WAKE THE WARRIOR

On exhibition from 26th October 2013, The Potteries Museum, Stoke on Trent. In collaboration with The Potteries Museum, Stoke on Trent and the Heritage Lottery Fund. A commission inspired by the Staffordshire Hoard.

"Not the sound of the harp wake the warriors,
but the dark raven greedy over the doomed,
talking away saying to the eagle how it went for him at the meal,
while the wolf he plundered the slain."
Beowulf

“Wake the Warrior” is a hollow filigree drawing that explores the mythology, culture and spirituality of the Early Middle Ages Staffordshire Hoard. Artist Naseem Darbey adopts the Raven from the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf as her messenger. Stitched from thousands of black threads and internally lit on a plinth where trailing threads from the Raven’s body fall over the edges like so many unfurled precious metal wires from one of the Hoard’s filigree treasures, her Raven symbolises death as an inevitable part of life.

But so too Darbey’s Raven is the inverse: life discovered in death. The duality allows the artist to examine and question the deliberate burial of the military ornamentation; the theatre of war, and the literal and figurative distortions discovered when the Hoard was found more than a millennia after it was hastily buried.
