Wild Boar Street:
Unearthing the Lost Districts of Bradford

A year-long project uncovering the hidden stories of Bradford’s lost Wapping district through archaeology, nature, family history, drawing, textiles and making.

Funded by Arts Council England, Wild Boar Street builds on my earlier project Mona and the Moths, which began with the story of my great-aunt Mona, born on Wild Boar Street in 1920.

Now I’m digging deeper, into the ground, into the history, and into the stories of the people connected to Wapping.

I’m exploring what remains of this lost part of Bradford through archaeology, while tracing family histories, memories and connections to the area. The project starts with my own family story, but moves beyond it to uncover the wider story of Wapping and the people who lived, worked and made their lives there.

What we uncover, and what we don’t, will spark a programme of community co-creation. Together, we’ll transform discoveries, stories, drawings and ideas into textiles and four interactive sculptures, which will be shared throughout the project and exhibited in 2027.

I don’t know exactly what we’re going to uncover, or where the project will take us, and that’s the exciting bit.

Follow the journey as it unfolds, from archaeological discoveries and family stories to community making, unexpected finds and everything in between.

I’ll keep updating this page as the project develops, so check back for new discoveries, stories and events.

Come and discover the lost district of Wapping through real archaeological finds, local stories, drawing and making. Handle objects uncovered during the Wild Boar Street archaeology dig, share your own memories and stories, and help us piece together the history of this lost Bradford neighbourhood.
